Free Six-Piece Dome Pattern for Puppet Heads
One of the most popular and beginner-friendly ways to make a soft puppet head is by using a six-piece dome pattern. This versatile design is ideal for creating rounded puppet heads with dimension, and it’s widely used in professional puppet building and DIY puppet crafts.
What Is a Six-Piece Dome Pattern?
A six-piece dome pattern is a basic shape made of six identical wedge-like segments that, when sewn or glued together, form a spherical or oval dome. This dome becomes the foundation of the puppet’s head, giving it a soft, sculptable shape that you can cover with various fabrics and add features like eyes, noses, and mouths.
How to Use the Pattern to Build a Puppet Head
Step 1: Download and Print the Pattern
You can find free six-piece dome templates online or draw one yourself. Each wedge looks like a curved triangle—narrow at the tip and wide at the base. The width and length determine the size of the puppet’s head. For a child-sized hand puppet, each wedge is usually around 6 to 7 inches long.
Step 2: Trace the Pattern onto Foam
Use ½-inch upholstery foam or high-density foam for the best results. Trace the dome wedge pattern 12 times—6 pieces for the top half of the head and 6 pieces for the bottom half. Use a marker to clearly outline the shapes, and make sure the foam’s textured side faces out, if applicable.
Step 3: Cut the Foam Pieces
Carefully cut the 12 foam pieces using sharp scissors, a sharp box cutter, or an electric carving knife for clean edges. Try to keep the cuts smooth and consistent to help with alignment during assembly.
Step 4: Assemble the Top and Bottom Domes
Using contact cement or hot glue, attach the foam wedges edge-to-edge to form two separate domes…one for the top of the puppet’s head and one for the bottom (jaw or lower face). Always apply glue to both edges, let it dry for a few seconds, then press the pieces firmly together. It helps to curve the foam gently as you go to encourage the dome shape.
Step 5: Glue the Top and Bottom Together
Once both halves are fully assembled and dry, glue the top and bottom domes together at the seam. Leave an opening at the back or bottom if you’re inserting a hand grip or finger controls. You now have a hollow, lightweight puppet head with a rounded shape.
Step 6: Cover with Fabric
Stretch fleece, faux fur, felt, or antron fleece over the foam dome. This is what gives your puppet a finished, characterful appearance. For best results:
- Use a flexible spray adhesive or hot glue to attach the fabric.
- Start at the center of the dome and work outward, smoothing as you go.
- Make darts (small triangular folds) to remove wrinkles around curved areas.
- Trim excess fabric and glue the edges to the inside of the foam.
Optional Additions: Add features such as eyes (plastic domes, ping pong balls, or felt), a nose, eyebrows, and a mouth plate to bring your puppet to life.
This method is the foundation for building many of Fairykin Theater’s puppets, like Squatch, Molly the Troll, and Creature Under the Bed, and once you master it, you can modify the dome shape to create all kinds of characters—monsters, animals, humans, and fantasy creatures.
